PREP FOR ECT


WHAT TO DO THE MORNING OF THE ECT:



Follow directions that were provided to you when you met with the physician for the initial ECT consult. The information below may not apply to every patient but is a general information we provide based on our ECT services.



ECT treatments are administred around 1 PM at INOVA Mt Vernon Hospital.



Patients are instructed to remain NPO ( Nothing to Eat ) 8 hours prior to the ECT.



We do allow patients to have clear liquids ( Water, Tea without milk or Jello till 10 AM the morning of ECT ( upto 4 Hours before the procedure )



Patients may take some of their APPROVED medications the morning of the ECT. Information regarding the medications that can be taken prior to and after ECT are discussed in detail with the patient during the ECT consult .



Patients have to register at '' SAME DAY SURGERY REGISTRATION AREA '' before their 1st ECT treatment .



After the 1st ECT treatment . Patients may come directly to the ECT suite for subsequent treatments



ECT & Endoscopy treatments are done in a common suite which is on the 3rd floor of INOVA Mt Vernon hospital between 3A and 3B.



Please meet with the ECT treatment team nurses ( LamAnh, Pat, Eileen Debbie , Jeanine , Mary Joan ).

Family may wait in the family waiting area located just outside the ECT suite.



ECT treatment itself is very brief but expect a total of an hour for recovery time post anesthesia.



Post anesthesia recovery time is different for every patients .



Patients are only allowed to go home after being medically cleared by the anesthesiologist & Psychiatrist.



While patients can come by themselves they can only be discharged with a responsible adult as per anesthesia guidelines. Patients have to have a responsible family member or a friend give them a ride back home after ECT .
