Client Experience What our patients say about our practice & their experience with ECT Treatment. My experience with receiving Electroconvulsive therapy, known as ECT, at Inova Mt Vernon Hospital. I received and am receiving ECT under the care of the ECT treatment team: consisting foremost of Dr. Rhea Mehra and nurses and anesthesiologists. I receive this treatment at Inova Mt Vernon Hospital. My condition, severe depression, necessitated using the procedure of ECT. I had been chronically depressed for years and when the depression came to a fever pitch I was hospitalized for months: I was tried on various medications and despite the best psychiatric care I continued to deteriorate. Initially, I was very scared to begin ECT, because I was so anxious about being put under with anesthesia. But the nurses, being highly trained in anesthesiology, gave me lots of support thus deflecting my anxieties about going under anesthesia; so I would assent to ECT. Also, the nurses were very kind and gentle making for a relaxed atmosphere before ECT. The anesthesiologists were very helpful in answering questions about the procedure and also being very kind and personable. With having this sensitive ECT team of nurses, anesthesiologists and Dr Mehra- my anxieties, which were very high, were greatly lessened by their singular care, enabling me to receive ECT. Dr. Mehra’s expertise has surpassed all previous psychiatrists performing ECT. First and foremost she is acutely aware of the patients needs: informing them on all aspects of the procedure and being responsive by giving her amazing amount of energy and dedication to the practice of ECT. Her studies at medical school, in the most progressive university setting, have made her a highly skilled doctor. She brings so much knowledge and experience to her practice of medicine. She is readily available to all inquires- questions to be asked about ECT and psychiatry in general. I have recovered significantly from my depression. Before ECT I failed all the trials with medications and had literally lost my ability to function-not eating or drinking, not sleeping, the fear of death was upon me and I had lost my ability to speak. Now I’m back: the life I thought I had lost is now here. I’m attending school; working on my undergraduate degree and just reveling in being well. Allison.P
